Restoration of Pannett Park

Restoration of Pannett Park
MORE work is under way on the exciting restoration of Pannett Park.
The park was awarded a £1.9m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund's Parks for People programme for restoration.

Improvements are being carried out over the next 18 months, including a state-of-the-art play area, restoration of the lily pond and better access for the disabled with an estimated completion date of next spring.

Robert Everiss, Pannett Park project officer, said: "The start of work at Pannett Park this week is a real milestone towards the restoration of Pannett Park to its former glory.

"It is really important the park has something to offer people of all ages.

"During public consultation exercises held in 2007 and 2008, the new play area was easily the most popular proposal for improvements to the park.  When completed, the play area will be the most up-to-date in the borough."

Coun Steve Smith, Whitby mayor, said: "I cut the first sod of earth and then the diggers moved in.If all goes to plan the children's play area will be complete by the beginning of August.  It was very exciting, this is the first major park project for Robert Everiss and for the contractor company John Hellens Ltd.  The timing will fall in really well for the school holidays, to have it completed in 10 weeks' time in time for the children being off school."
