Whitby Glass
Behind our brightly lit window which sparkles with every hue of the rainbow, is the work of skilled glass hand-craftsmen which includes our world-famous glass ducks and flowers in vases, birds, fish, teddy bears, elephants, dolphins, "spun" glass tipped with gold and a host of other glass novelties.
Speciality lines now enhance the shop - unique dolls house food, porcelain, Disney, Willow Tree, Wallace and Gromit, perfume bottles, and marbles in all colours and sizes, but watching the Lucky Ducks being made is the perennial attraction - visitors can see a demonstration of glass-making on request and school parties are always welcome.
With our 50th Anniversary this year, Lucky Ducks have a rich heritage. The first of the company's hallmark Lucky Ducks was originally made at the request of actors from the Whitby Theatre who required a lucky charm in glass. Made at a workbench in the shop, the public can actually watch the creation of ducks and also view a map on the wall behind the bench which shows the most remote destinations to which Lucky Ducks have been sent.
Live demonstrations of glass-making take place throughout the year at the shop. School parties are also welcome, and Dorothy, a former teacher, will describe the different types of glasses used, the temperatures needed, and the methods of fashioning the various pieces. For school parties, it is advisable to book in advance to ensure somebody is there to provide a demonstration. The shop has wheelchair access.
